About Essex Community Energy

Our work

Essex Community Energy CIC is a not-for profit social enterprise (a Community Interest Company).

Our mission is to make it a simple possible for anyone – household, business, farm, and community – to install solar PV and battery storage to help reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.

What are we doing

We are designing a new service that helps households, businesses, and communities to install solar PV and battery storage. 

Our core activities include:

  • Workshops and Training: To empower our housholds, businesses and communities with knowledge, we host workshops and training sessions on the benefits of renewable energy and how to make the transition.
  • Solar PV Installation: We design and install custom solar PV and battery storage systems that maximise energy generation, cost savings and reductions in carbon emissions
  • ‘Pay as you Use’ options: Lack of money need not stop you saving money and carbon. For people who cannot afford the upfront cost of installing solar PV, we have a ‘Pay as you Use’ option. 
  • Buy local, discounted renewable energy: if you cannot install solar PV for whatever reason, we have an option where you can buy discounted green energy from your friends, neighbours and our wider network.
  • Community Projects: We initiate and support community-based renewable energy projects, enabling local groups and communities to benefit from shared solar installations and cooperative energy solutions

We are piloting this service in two parts of Essex: the Colne Valley, and Manningtree. Once the service has been tested, it will be offered throughout Essex and elsewhere.

We are also developing a process to make it simple and fast for whole communities to adopt solar PV.

The team supporting the development of Essex Community Energy comes from four organisations:

  • UK Community Works CIC

Their work is part of the EssNet project, funded by Innovate UK as part of their Net Zero Living Programme
