Help for households

For homes, we have three options:

  1. We install PV and battery storage in your home. You then buy it from us once it is installed.
  2. We install PV and battery storage in your home. You then buy the electricity the solar array produces on ‘Pay as You Use’ basis
  3. If your home is unsuitable for solar, you can buy the surplus PV your neighbours are generating at a discount.

How this works

  1. You register your interest here
  2. Based on a geospatial survey we will let you know:
    • If your house is suitable for solar or not*
    • Approximately how much money you could save.

If you give us your energy bills, we can make a more accurate assessment of your savings.

  1. You confirm your interest
  2. We secure funding
  3. We arrange for the PV to be installed
  4. At this point you decide:
    • To buy the solar PV, or
    • To buy the electricity the solar array produces on ‘Pay as you go’ basis

Benefits to you

Reduce your energy bills

Electricity generated by the PV will cost you around 14 pence per kilowatt hour, significantly less than suppliers are currently charging. You should save between 10 and 25% on your electricity bills. This will increase if you use a ‘Time of Use’ Tariff such as Economy 7 or Octopus Go.

Cut your carbon emissions

The British electrical grid is decarbonising fast, but it still emits a kilogram of carbon dioxide for every 5 kWh of electricity consumed. Installing solar means you reduce the emissions from the electricity you generate and consume to zero.

What if I can't have solar on my roof?

Don’t worry. Some homes are not suitable for solar. These include flats with no roof, rented homes where the landlord will not permit the installation of solar PV, homes shaded by trees or buildings, some listed buildings, and some homes in conservation areas.

If this is you, you can join our ‘Local Energy Market’. This means you can buy discounted green electricity from neighbours and others in the Essex Community Energy network. This way you can still save money and take meaningful action to address climate change.
